Effective Fire Prevention Measures in the Home 2

By Thomas Yoon Although we can do our utmost to prevent fires from happening by isolating the sources of heat from combustibles and oxygen, it is often the unexpected event that catches us unawares. Carelessness Sometimes, forgetfulness can result in an accidental fire. Putting a kettle to boil water on a gas stove and forgetting about it can be disastrous. When all the water has evaporated, the kettle becomes red hot, melt and spread the molten metal around. LP gas leaks are also dangerous. If the fuel-air mixture is in just the right proportion, an explosion can occur when a heat source is introduced in. Many accidents have occurred when a light is switched on in an explosive environment. The correct thing to do then is to free the room of any gas by shutting off the source of the gas and letting in more fresh air into the room. Chemical reactions can also cause heat and fire. Mixing acids and alkalis, mixing components of some household glue like epoxy resins and hardeners can generate quite a substantial amount of heat that can lead to fires. The containers used and the amount of chemical used can have a great effect on the heat produced. Plastic containers are known to melt and burn when large quantities of thermosetting plastics like epoxies are mixed with hardeners. Fires are also known to be started by the careless smokers who throw lighted cigarette butts indiscriminately. Many bush fires are started this way. Some areas are especially vulnerable to careless acts like these. People working in the garage at home should be very careful not to cause a fire, especially with open petrol cans and other volatile fuels around them. Sometimes, smokers fall asleep while smoking, and their bed or sofa catches fire. The rubber foam mattress used for bedding can catch fire easily. Although most electrical equipment is quite safe as far as fire is concerned, the use of sub-standard and poorly designed equipment may give rise to overheating and fires. Carelessness in the area of electrical appliances can cause fires as well as electrical shocks. Many households use multiple power points because they have many electrical equipment that must be used at the same time. Videos, television, fans, radios, and fancy lights may occupy only one electrical socket. When a multiple adapter is used, usually the connection pins cannot be fitted very tightly. The loose power connections are a source of sparking and deterioration of the insulation materials and can lead to fires. This will be worst if high powered appliances are used because the electrical current drawn from these will be very much higher and so the wires and connections gets hotter. Preventive Measures Since we know that all the three conditions of heat, fuel and oxygen must be present in order for a fire to start; our basic fire prevention strategy must be to keep them isolated from each other. Heat sources must be kept away from combustible materials and if possible, from oxygen. We should take a critical look at all the sources of heat in the home. They are the potential fire hazards. It is good to make an audit of our own homes and make a list, or at least be aware of all the heat sources in the home. Electrical wiring, appliances, gas stoves, kerosene lamps, candles, electrical light bulbs, ovens, electrical kettles, barbecue fires, burning garden refuse, and so on, are some of them. Even spells of dry weather should be looked at with vigilance. The sources of heat are many. Below are some of the sources of heat that we have to exercise caution, so that we can be especially careful not to let them come into contact with combustibles: Kitchen Gas Appliances – The normal appliances in the kitchen are the gas stoves, and the kerosene stoves. These are normally safe, efficient and seldom gives trouble. However, the conditions of the kitchen stoves are often spoilt by spillage of soups, gravies, and other food materials from the cooking processes. After a long time of use, and especially with cooks who do not take special precautions, the gas stove become blackened with carbon, oil and other debris. Gas orifices and nozzles get choked up. Carbon deposits pile up. The carbon deposits become its other source of fuel. The soot fire can burn if it is heated long enough. The environment in a busy kitchen can make it a fire risk. Gas hoses are especially prone to deteriorate if the material used can be attacked by the presence of oil. Cooking oil is ever present in the kitchen environment. Hoses coated by a layer of oil will produce leaks. Any leak in the gas hoses is dangerous. It can shoot flames of fire all around the place uncontrollably and spread the fire. Do a regular check on your gas hoses and service your gas stove regularly. Electrical Installations and Appliances – Mains electrical wiring and their components can be a hidden source of heat that can cause a fire. Sometimes, due to loose contacts in the terminals of electrical switchboxes, some sparking will occur. If this is not found out early and rectified, the sparking will become worse, and the heat produced becomes more. Carbonization of the insulation materials will occur. Once the carbon gets deposited on the insulation materials, it becomes a conductor of electricity. Short-circuiting of the electrical wiring will occur leading to overheating of the wiring. If the electrical protection devices do not work, the overheating will cause the insulation materials of the wiring to even melt or decompose. When the decomposition gases given out by the insulation materials catch fire, the whole house can be burnt down. Do a regular check up of your electrical wiring in your house, and quickly call in a qualified electrician to rectify any fault. Electrical appliances also have to be used properly. When people modify equipment indiscriminately, sometimes they leave out or bypass certain safety features put in by the manufacturer. Appliances can become overheated and cause burning. It is better not to do any modification unless you know what you are doing. Do not do bypass any safety feature in any electrical appliance. Burning of candles, garden refuse, incense, mosquito coils and other open burning – The sources of heat is quite obvious. When we do any open burning, make sure that the source of heat is not able to reach other surrounding materials. It is good practice to clear the area before doing open burning. We must also think about how to control the fire if it gets too big. Be ready to dose the fire with water if it gets too big. We know that we need a source of heat, a fuel, and oxygen in order to have a fire. Other than looking at all the places where we encounter sources of heat, it is good preventive practice to store easily combustible materials safely. Some materials do not need a lot of heat in order to ignite, while some materials can be kept at quite high temperatures without any fire occurring. We need to identify the easily combustible materials and keep them out of harms way. Some materials in the home are known to be easily combustible. It is advisable to store these materials in a cool and isolated place away from the house if possible. Should a fire occur by any chance, they will have less opportunity to spread. Below are a list of commonly used inflammable materials in the home. However, the list is not exhaustible: Paints, turpentine, spirit, aerosols for spray paints. Kerosene, petrol, diesel, and other oils used for fuel. Aerosols used for pesticides Paper and wood, especially when dry Vegetable oils used in cooking Other solvents like nail polish There are other materials that can catch fire if brought to a source of heat. Some of them are listed below. The best way to handle these is to do regular house cleaning to remove them: Loose organic dust like sawdust, cotton dust, woolen dust Oily deposits from the atmosphere Dust and deposits from insects Involving Others Sometimes, even though we have taken all the precautions, fires can still come from a neighbor’s house. Sometimes, it can even come from the sky in the form of fireworks! Sometimes the sparks from a neighbor’s rubbish fire can fly over to your own home and cause a fire. So it is simply not enough that you alone know how to prevent fires. The people around you should also know about fire prevention. Everybody needs to be educated in fire prevention. When a fire happens in the neighborhood, there is a very real possibility that the fire can spread to the surrounding houses. It is essential that no fires at all start in any of the houses in the neighborhood or even the community. When everyone understands the grave consequences of their actions, the fire risk becomes more manageable. Children are especially high potential fire starters if they are not taught about the risks. With their natural curiosity, playing with fire comes naturally to them at some point in their life. Adults have the responsibility to impart the knowledge of fire prevention and the consequences of fire to them quite early in their growing up years. In order for adults to have this knowledge themselves, the relevant authorities should organize courses on fire safety and fire safety awareness campaigns. The media, including newspapers, magazines, television and radio, has an important role to play in getting the message of fire prevention to the general public. Their message should be able to reach the masses and ingrain in them the importance of fire prevention. The message of fire prevention should be delivered continuously over a long period of time. A fire safety campaign should only be considered successful when people considers fire prevention a natural thing to do. It must become habit and a daily way of life. Then only can lives and properties be secured. The knowledge of fire prevention is even more important than fire detection and fire fighting. If a fire does not start, or is prevented from starting, there is no longer any need for fire detection and fire fighting. Everybody should be preventing fires even before it can start. Is prevention enough? Sometimes, we have done the best we can. We have isolated the sources of heat. We have stored away inflammable materials away from sources of heat. We have done whatever we can to the best of our knowledge. Can a fire still start? Incidents of fire can still happen. For example, a mouse in your house may decide to chew on your highly powered electrical wires, or a lizard may managed to crawl into your electrical switchboard and cause a short circuit, or the hot weather may cause the weeds and bushes around your house to catch fire. So while steps taken for the prevention of fires will keep us safe most of the time, it is also good to be prepared in case a fire still starts despite our actions. There are portable smoke detectors available in the market for those who want to have an early warning when a fire starts. This can in fact be considered prevention too – preventing a large fire. These smoke detectors will be able to alert the occupants about any small fires so that it can be put off before it becomes large and unmanageable. It can prevent loss of property and lives. Any fires detected early have a very good chance of being extinguished. It is also good to keep a portable fire extinguisher at home for the purpose of putting out small fires. For the home, the most suitable portable fire extinguisher to keep is a dry powder extinguisher because it will be able to handle all the likely classes of fires found in the home. It can be used to put out fires involving solid materials like wood and paper, oils and even electrical fires without the risk of electrical shocks. In conclusion, when we are able to instill awareness of fire prevention to all the people around us, we will have won the battle with fire. Fire becomes our ally and we can tap its benefits without worrying about its consequences. Fire becomes our friend and not our foe. “How To Warning Secret” Nothing Else Compares To Preserving Life from Fire! The Holy Spirit and the End of the Age

By William Bell, Jr. Joel’s Prophecy of the Last Days Joel foresaw the coming of the Spirit in connection with the last days. (Joel 2:28-30) It is important to note that these were the last days of Israel and of the covenant that God made with them in Sinai. (Hebrews 1:1,2; 8:13) The coming of the Spirit signaled that the time of judgment had arrived. In the chapter following, Joel adds, “For behold in those days and at that time, when I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem, I will also gather all nations, and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; and I will enter into judgment with them there…(3:1,2) Peter Cites Joel’s Prophecy As A Warning of Impending Judgment On Pentecost following Christ’s resurrection, Peter described the events occurring on that day. There appeared cloven tongues like fire, a sound as of a rushing wind and eleven Galileans stood miracoulously speaking in dozens of foreign languages before a curious multitude of devout Jews. Quoting Joel (2:16-20), Peter warns the nation whose hands were still dripping with the blood of the Messiah, namely that judgment upon them would arrive in short order. The national message of warning urged by the apostles was, –repent! For those who did, salvation awaited. Particularly, they were to save themselves from that perverse generation, (Acts 2:40) i.e. the one upon whom Jesus predicted would come vengeance for all the righteous blood shed on the earth. (Matt. 23:34-38) The Spirit and the Parousia Jesus promised the Holy Spirit during the interim of his going to the Father. This was the time of longsuffering and encouragement to the nation to heed the message of repentance. (2 Peter 3:9) During his absence Jesus would not leave the disciples as orphans. In his place, he would send the Holy Spirit as a helper until his return. Through the signs, he worked with the apostles until the end of that age, Mark 16:20, Matthew 28:20. This time is however brief as Jesus referred to it as a “little while,” (John 16:16-19). Jesus’ coming, then at hand, (James 5:7,8) came in a very little while, (Hebrews 10:37), –a period of about 40 years. Jesus’ return marked the end of the eschatological Spirit in the last days. No longer is he absent, but once again present with the church, not in humiliation, but in his glory, as Lord of lords and King of kings (2 Corinthians 5:8; 1 Timothy 6:14, 15). 4 Key Reasons for Relationships

By Elaine Sihera I found a wonderful person on the internet 3 years ago, but he was separated from his wife and decided to go back to her. So we recently went our separate ways after the most heavenly two year relationship. He felt it difficult to start afresh with me for a variety of reasons including his age, despite the deep love we had for each other, and I have to respect that. But what a fellow and what a friendship, especially as we were chalk and cheese in every sense of the word: culturally, racially and in philosophy!! The passionate feelings are still there between us but I have to move on, I guess. But I would not have missed the journey for the world. It all adds to our learning experience. He certainly provided the litmus test and yardstick for what makes me happy in a relationship and I give thanks for it. That’s why I am so certain of what I want now and feel good at having the skills to detect whether it is there or not in any potential date. The 4 Reasons for a Relationship Many of us do not know this, but people come into our lives for one or more of four different reasons: 1.To teach us something, or for us to teach them in turn – and the lesson could be either positive or a negative wake-up call; AND/OR 2. To guide us out of a depression or bad patch in our lives;AND/OR 3. To build up our confidence to deal with the next person in line – who could even be the big one for us – AND/OR 4. To be the genuine article our long-term soulmates or partners. So hankering after lost loves in bitterness, anger or vengeful hostility is the worse thing you could do to yourself. They have served their purpose and moved on. It has to be accepted with LOVE and FORGIVENESS for your life to progress too. I thought David was the real thing because of the intensity and length of the relationship. But, he was type No.1 and 2 – there to teach me about real, unselfish love and guide me out of my crisis while I taught him an alternative view of life. And boy, did we learn!! He will always be a beacon for me. I thank him so much because I am a different, much better, person now than when I first met him. Unrealistic Expectations However, the main problem with seeking a new partner, with meetings which flounder and with many relationships which end up being shorter than expected, is that most people believe every person they meet and like will be the BIG ONE, No.4! But nothing could be further from the truth. The trick is to let that first contact gradually reveal the nature of itself without too many expectations, while taking an interest in that person. Instead of just focusing on yourself, be detached, yet reciprocal, to give yourself some enjoyment and happiness in the learning process. Often we are too busy focusing on our needs, wondering how the relationship is going to shape up that we miss the early incompatible signals. But they are ALWAYS there! For those in failing relationships which are proving increasingly unhappy, let it go! You have both done your jobs and are merely preventing each other from carrying on your work elsewhere, from personal self-fulfilment or even meeting the REAL one. Painful, I know, but it is really about choices and results. The ones you want for your life. If you have genuinely tried to keep it going without much change, hanging on will only lead to a bottomless pit of unhappiness and frustration which robs you of self-esteem and makes you feel worse. If you are not being validated and affirmed, you will feel awful, which shows in your actions and body, making you unattractive to others. New Beginnings One of the first tell-tale signs of an unhappy relationship are people who rarely smile, with haunted looks in their eyes and weighty bodies! It never fails. But they don’t even realise that’s how they look! I weighed 157 pounds during the last months of my marriage. Today I am a slim 135 lbs and my confidence and happiness know no bounds. Proof that letting go of a dying relationship creates space for something new and, more likely, something magical. You could be surprised at the outcome! A former boyfriend, from whom parting was mutually agreed, recently came back into my life, as a great friend and handy shoulder, having dealt with his own issues. I was appreciating this new comfortable friendship between us when he said out of the blue, “You are a really gorgeous lady.” Top that if you can!! And thanks for that Jas. You made my day – and the feeling is most reciprocal! When we let go, it is ALWAYS for a good reason which is not visible at the time and the rewards are usually unexpected. We just need the courage to ACT. ELAINE SIHERA (Ms Cyprah – http://www.myspace.com/elaineone) is an expert author, media contributor and columnist. Are All the Dead Christians in Heaven?

By Debra Lohrere It has long been taught that when a Christian dies they go straight to heaven. Is this what the Bible teaches or have paganistic doctrines and myths crept unbeknown into our Christian faith? What did Jesus say about his friend Lazarus who had died? John 11:11-14 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. Jesus clearly showed us that the dead sleep. If Lazarus had gone to heaven Jesus would have said that he was in heaven with the Father. Also, after Jesus raised Lazarus, did anyone ask Lazarus What was it like in heaven? Tell us about it. No one did, because it was the belief of the day that when someone died they slept until the resurrection on the last day. This is further clarified in Psalms where we are told that when we die our thoughts perish Psalms 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. We are also told that we will not rise again until the heavens are no more (when Jesus returns) Job 14:12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep. Paul reinforced this understanding 1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Many Christians believe that when they die they go directly to heaven, even though the day of judgment has not even occurred yet. They visualize themselves in heaven with the angels praising God. But what does the Bible say? Psalms 115:17 The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence. It is clear that the Bible writers all believed that the state of the dead is like sleeping, to be awakened the moment after they closed their eyes at the final trumpet at the coming of Jesus on the day of redemption. 1 Corinthians 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. Job made it clear that we return to dust and are no more until the resurrection Job 7:21 And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be. There are many deceptions of Satan going on in these end times and spiritism is on the increase. If people realized that the dead are all asleep and cant communicate with us, then they would start to question who exactly it is that they are communicating with. There are many deceptive demonic spirits in the invisible world around us, who take every opportunity they can to lead people astray. It is time that we recognized that when mediums are speaking to the other side it is actually the evil angels that they are talking to and not dead beloved relatives. How can we help those who have been tricked by these deceptive spirits, if we dont demonstrate to people from a Biblical perspective that the dead are asleep and have no thoughts, so it cant be them doing the communicating? All Bible references are from the King James Version. Wedding Lore

By Mary Jane Holmes There are few other life events so steeped in tradition as weddings. Do you know the origins of our present day customs? Why do we follow them? Well that one is easy you do it because your mom did and her mom and so on back countless generations. Here is some of the history behind many of our modern day wedding traditions. Bridesmaid Dresses are often identical in style and color. Why? In ancient times the brides friends and female relatives would dress exactly like the bride in an effort to fool evil spirits bent on spoiling her happiness. The Post Vow Kiss The Ancient Romans sealed every legal contract with a kiss. Thus the marriage was not legal until the bride and groom kissed. This is why the wedding official says, You may now kiss the bride. The White Wedding Gown brides have always worn white, Right? No white wedding dresses did not become common in the west until Queen Victoria wore one at her wedding. Before that bright colors were the norm. The Receiving Line originated in ancient times when it was believed that good luck came to anyone who touched the bride and groom on their wedding day. Giving Away the Bride Long ago an unmarried girl or woman was considered her fathers property, so at the wedding he would walk her down the aisle of the church, and give her away thereby transferring ownership to the husband. Why Does the Groom Carry the Bride Across the Threshold? There is more than one bit of lore about this practice. One is that when a girl could be kidnapped and forced to marry against her will, the groom would have to carry her by force into her new home. Another is that ancient Romans considered it bad luck for a bride to trip when crossing the threshold of her new home. So the groom would carry her in. He depended on his best man (friend) for help in fighting them and to get him and his bride safely to the church. A Locked Church Door In Irish tradition, once the bride and groom were safely inside the church, guests would lock the church door to prevent the groom from running if he changed his mind. Mortgage Broker Marketing Made Simple

By Jeffrey Nelson Looking for a way to change up your mortgage broker marketing? Probably the easiest way to deliver an efficient, cost effective marketing is with the use of a simple post card. Most mortgage brokers have used post card marketing at some point, but their message is frequently diluted because they deliver the simply rate sheets. The postcard doesnt capture the attention of the reader, and as a result, doesnt yield much return for the mortgage broker. Theres a far better way to use postcards as a marketing tool one that delivers a great return for the broker. Postcards are effective for the following reasons: They are easy to mass-produce and affordable to print. Postcards are inexpensive to mail. Postcards demand little time and attention. The reader can read through the postcard in a few minutes. Postcards are easy to keep around your reader is far more likely to keep a postcard up on their refrigerator or on their desk for future action than a letter that will get misfiled or put away. But postcards are only effective when used well. Your mortgage postcard has to be more than a mere introduction to a product or a current rate. You can pack a lot of information into a postcard. The front of the postcard can contain an attention getting article of several paragraphs. The back can fit a smaller article, but still enough information to keep the reader interested. When you gear you postcards to solving clients problems, not just introducing a product, you are far more likely to get their attention. And, because the content is simple and specific, it delivers even more impact. All postcards should contain a call to action, something that encourages the reader to call you for more information. While postcard are great tools for their size and expense, that doesnt mean they dont require foresight and planning. Fortunately, there are some great tools that make postcard marketing easy. Youll find that there are some great postcards services companies that develop intriguing content that is time-sensitive. Not only are you able to get a postcard that is tailored to your business needs, but you can also use the service to send out the postcards. You approve the postcard, the company takes care of the printing and mailing of the card to your database. Postcards can be one of the most effective tools in a mortgage broker marketing plan. Dont overlook these simple, yet productive tools that bring a steady stream of clients with a minimum of effort. Weight: The Thanksgiving Hangover

By Virginia Bola, PsyD The feasting is over. The turkey has disappeared: roasted and hot, microwaved leftovers, then cold sandwiches and eventually croquettes or thrown into soup. You climb on the scale with trepidation and breathe a long sigh of relief when the dreaded poundage fails to appear. Before you relax and think you got away with it, remember that your sneaky little body is playing its usual tricks. Two or three days of Spartan eating will make you feel virtuous again -until you step on the scale and find you’ve gained 5 pounds. “Fraud” you shriek. “I’ve been so good!” Remember the holiday feast? It has finally caught up with you as you knew, deep down, that it would. What to do? We all need brief periods of self-indulgence – it’s part of the human condition. Expect a setback on your weight loss goals and let that knowledge mitigate your disappointment. Then continue on your diet with the assurance that a special occasion blip doesn’t define your future. Enjoy the memories of a family gathering while carefully planning your next week’s intake. Appreciate what you have accomplished so far and avoid loading yourself down with guilt and self-reproach. Get back on your program as quickly as possible because (sorry to bring this up now) Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat. Virginia Bola is a licensed psychologist and an admitted diet fanatic. She specializes in therapeutic reframing and the effects of attitudes and motivation on individual goals. Weight Loss – A Technique that Works

By Suzann Kale A pill is just not going to do it. Not in the long run. Neither is a fad diet. We’re talking about permanent weight loss and optimum health. We’re advocating an active, aggressive approach to our fitness and ideal weight. This time we’re going to do this right, and we’re going to get gorgeous. The system is called Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle. It was developed by a professional bodybuilder. Bodybuilders are people who must be fit in order to earn a living. They can’t yo-yo. They are physically in shape and they stay that way. Tom Venuto, the bodybuilder who developed the Burn the Fat system, has been bodybuilding for 23 years, and has all kinds of degrees in exercise science and personal training. Here are some of his fundamentals: No diet pillsNo powdered or liquid meal replacement drinksNo expensive supplementsNo following trendy diets that were only thought up to sell booksOnce the weight is lost, it stays off permanentlyAnyone can benefit, no matter your genetic or hormonal situationYour metabolism will change, but it will change naturallyThe ultimate goal is good health, and a naturally high energy levelHere’s how it works: You keep track of the number of calories you take in each day. And you keep track, with a caliper, of your percent body fat each day. But your most important tool is a notebook and a pen. Each day you record your caloric intake and the caliper measurement. The goal is to burn off more fat than you take in through calories. It’s done scientifically, you throw your whole self into the project, you exercise every day, and you see results. Through this work – and the details provided in Mr. Venturo’s book – you change your lifestyle. Lifestyle becomes about health, about eating properly, about not getting ripped off by so called diet foods and fad diets. Lifestyle becomes about strength and fitness. And as you see yourself getting stronger and slimmer, you start to feel better, and you will love having a gorgeous, fit body. And there’s no way you’ll let these new life-giving habits get away from you. The Burn the Fat system’s basic premise is to gain muscle while burning off body fat. It works for women as well as men, for people who want to lose 100 pounds and people who want to lose 10 pounds. “This is not a quick fix,” explains Mr. Venuto. But he adds, “You’ll notice the first changes start to happen the very first week.” It seems like common sense, but Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle is not just about losing weight. It’s about building muscle, building strength, and adding energy to your life. It’s really about improving the quality of your life – a gift only you can give yourself.
